Dr. Joe Savage on Campus

Distinguished Speaker Series: Dr. Joe Savage

The School of Business & Government® hosted Dr. Joe Savage in its Distinguished Speaker Series. The School hosts nationally recognized experts and thought-leaders throughout the year.

The Speaker Series enables students to learn from authorities, experts, and leaders in business and government. Presentations are held on OCU’s Circleville campus so students have opportunities to meet and network with speakers.

Dr. Savage is founder of Roads of Hope, Inc., established in 2014 to prevent and protect orphans from becoming victims of human trafficking. Roads of Hope's focus is on Moldova and Ukraine, considered ‘Ground Zero’ of trafficking. Roads of Hope’s Emmanuel House in Chisinau, Moldova, is a model of orphan care and sex trafficking prevention.  Dr. Savage spends months each year in Eastern Europe, participating in dangerous orphan rescue efforts. Dr. Savage, who holds a Doctor of Ministry from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, spoke about life choices—namely, how students make choices that affect their lives. He shared his belief in these maxims:

  1. Life is hard: Do not waste time trying to make it easy.
  2. We all die: Our wounds must become “sacred wounds” to prepare us for the final letting go.
  3. You are not that important: Humility is central to human truth and happiness.
  4. You are not in control: Reality and God are in control of our lives.
  5. Your life is not about you: You are part of something and somebody bigger than yourself. Your job is to listen, obey, and adore, not calculate. You are part of a great, holy mystery.

Dr. Savage discussed how our choices affect God’s calling us and provided examples of how worldly distractions can prevent us from following the path God places before us that can richly enhance our lives.

Dr. Savage has spoken to more than 2,300 audiences ranging from inner-city youth to corporate and team events for Aflac, NASA, Coca-Cola, Olympic athletes, National Football League, Alive Festival, and Alabama Superintendent Association. He is also author of two books and has distributed 775,000 devotions on leadership and faith. Pat Williams of the NBA’s Orlando Magic included Joe in his Triumph: Powerful Stories of Athletes in Faith.
