Allyson Jones with Her Class in Honduras

Graduate Profile: Allyson Jones at International School of Tegucigalpa, Honduras

“When I was young, the Lord started to move in my heart and called me to be a missionary someday. Our family was involved in short-term missions, and we traveled a lot. When I was 16, I had an opportunity to teach English in Bogota, Colombia, through a local ministry. During that time, I discovered He was going to use teaching as the vehicle for an overseas ministry to which I was being called.

When I began looking for colleges, I looked for ministry-focused ones that would support the mission to which God was calling me. I love that OCU has a growth mindset. Even if a program does not exist yet, the staff and faculty are open to supporting students as they pioneer a new program or ministry to do what God has placed on their hearts.

In my OCU senior year, I had the opportunity to student teach at International School of Tegucigalpa, Honduras. This opportunity was possible because of Professor Jones and the incredible faculty who were open to me pursuing my calling, even when student teaching overseas had never been done at OCU. Professor Jones said to me: ‘If this is a dream God has for you, we want to help you fight for that dream.’ She proceeded to do whatever was needed to make that dream possible, including flying to Honduras to give me the formal observation I needed to graduate.

Now, I am in my second year of teaching 2nd grade, and I love my job! I love the diverse group of people with whom I live, work, and do ministry. Whether they are Hondurans or called to leave their home country and serve here like me, we are unified under the calling God has for us to serve the kids and families at this school. IST’s mission is to be a ‘leading, Christ-centered international school dedicated to transforming Honduras'.  We teach executive skills (integrity, responsibility, and respect) as well as content, such as math and reading skills.

We take service days with students and serve the community, one of my favorite activities.  I believe God will use this generation to raise up men and women of integrity and wisdom to serve God and transform Honduras for His glory. I have traveled to several areas of Honduras and seen the poorest and wealthiest. God is using those experiences and my meeting the people there to show me His heart for Honduras.”
